CPVC
CPVC Full Form:
Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride
What is CPVC?
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin is chlorinated to create chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), a thermoplastic. PVC is far less flexible than CPVC, which also has a lower temperature tolerance. Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC), first marketed by Lubrizol in the early 1960s, has proven valuable in a range of industrial applications where high usage temperature, high pressure, and resistance to corrosion and microbial are necessary.
How is CPVC made?
All of the piping, fittings, sheets, and ducting used today are constructed of CPVC, which was first manufactured from two distinct materials: chlorine and ethylene. Chlorine is a byproduct of the production of chlor-alkali salt. To extract ethylene, petroleum is placed in a specialized structure called a cracker. Manufacturers then combine these two parts to produce a brand-new liquid chemical known as ethylene dichloride (EDC).
EDC is then heated, allowed to dry out, and eventually converted through the ox chlorination process into vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).Vinyl chloride's monomer form has no use because it is an unstable chemical intermediate that is typically gaseous.
Vinyl chloride monomer needs to be transformed into a polymer, which is a chain of monomers, in order to become strong, stable, and useful. Manufacturers polymerize VCM in a high-pressure reactor to produce polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. This is how the CPVC products are made.
Uses of CPVC:
CPVC is certainly used to make the pipes like sprinklers or the hot and cold potable water application for the residential purposes.
Types of CPVC:
Following are the different types of CPVC Pipes:
Normal size pipe (NSP)
The pipe's inner diameter is described by NPS.
Copper tube size (CTS)
The outside diameter of the pipe is described as CTS.
Benefits of CPVC:
Low cost to manufacture and install
High heat distortion temperature
Chemical inertness
Outstanding mechanical properties
Great dielectric properties
Smoke and flame properties
Easy to find in many regions of country
