PS Full Form:
Polystyrene
What is PS?
Since 1839, when German pharmacist Eduard Simon first described the polymerization of styrene into a substance that would later be known as metastyrol, polymerization of styrene has been well-documented.
Styrene is a chemical building block utilized in the production of various products, and polymerizing it results in Polystyrene, a material with many uses. It is among the plastics used most frequently in thermoplastic injection molding. Polystyrene is a non-toxic, odorless substance that is typically found in the form of foam or plastic. It is widely utilized in both the automation and food packaging industries. Because of its strength and clarity, it may be used for anything from toys and plastic utensils to electronics and vehicle parts.
How is PS made?
By combining ethylene and benzene with aluminium chloride, ethylbenzene is produced, which is then used to make styrene. Then, this compound's benzene group is dehydrogenated to produce phenylethylene, also known as styrene, a transparent liquid hydrocarbon having the chemical formula CH2=CHC6H5. Free-radical initiators are used to polymerize styrene mostly in bulk and suspension techniques, however solution and emulsion approaches are also used.
